# Honeypot Defense

The Honeypot Defense system misleads attackers, reverses their analysis workflows, and prevents instant feedback when a reverse engineer attempts to patch license checks or hook authentication routines.

***

## The Problem with Instant Bans

When a protection system immediately crashes or throws an error dialog upon detecting a debugger, an attacker receives immediate feedback:

* *"My hook on function 0x14000100 was detected. Let me try hooking 0x14000150 instead."*

This allows attackers to pinpoint detection logic quickly through trial and error.

## Honeypot Strategy

With Honeypot Defense enabled (`ProtectionFlags.Honeypot`):

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

## Silent Flagging

When a tamper or debugger event occurs, the engine does **not** crash or display error messages.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

## Decoy Execution

Decoy functions simulate successful validation, returning fake tokens and dummy data to the attacker.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

## Delayed Action

The security engine waits for a configured duration (`HoneypotDelayMs`, e.g. 5,000 to 30,000 ms).
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

## Forensic Upload & Ban

The client reports the attacker's hardware profile and memory dumps to the server in the background, bans the HWID, and terminates the application cleanly later.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## C# Configuration

```csharp
using System;
using qPapelEasyAuth;
public class SecuritySetup
{
    public static void ConfigureHoneypot()
    {
        var config = new EasyAuthConfig
        {
            Flags = ProtectionFlags.All | ProtectionFlags.Honeypot,
            // Set delay duration in milliseconds (e.g. 10 seconds)
            HoneypotDelayMs = 10000,
            ClientVersion = "2.0.0"
        };
        qPapelEasyAuth.qPapelEasyAuth.SetConfig(config);
    }
}
```

## Honeypot Decoys Implemented

* **Fake License Keys**: Simulated success paths for invalid keys in patched binaries that fail silently on the next server handshake.
* **Decoy Memory Offsets**: Bogus global variables and pointers to waste time in static and dynamic analysis.
* **Silent Telemetry Sync**: Secret transmission of forensic memory logs to the backend before the attacker realizes the binary is compromised.

{% hint style="info" %}
Honeypot mode makes reverse engineering significantly more time-consuming because attackers cannot verify whether their patch succeeded until hours or days later when their HWID is banned.
{% endhint %}
